We are currently still in Thailand. Of course we can't get away from pictures here either! I think it must be part of us! These little girls are the daughters of a missionary family who are serving here in Asia. They were visiting relatives here in Chiang Mai, and we got the privilege of taking their portraits.

Photographing Children

Photographing children can be fun and rewarding, but it also has it's tough side. Children often don't give a rip whether or not you like the way they are behaving(or misbehaving) They may just happen to have a good case of the fidgets and find it impossible to sit still.
In all likelihood, there will be days when you what the child to do this:

And they will take a notion that they would much rather be doing this:

What to do then? Why make the best of it, and have fun in the process, if you can. If you can't you may as well find another job! :)
Yes, children can be trying, but also a lot of fun. Trust me, I know. I have two. John, pictured above, just turned three. He's all boy, and is bound to give us a run for our money. But we love him.
Below, for one last shot, is the two together. Christy is finally standing alone, and showing more and more Independence. The day will come when the two will be into all kinds of mischief together. I can already see it in the not-too-distant future.

We took pictures for a family gathering in Maryland this fall. I think this is my favorite. The dog adds extra interest in my opinion. The reason I waited til now to post them, is because they wanted to use them for Christmas cards.
Below is the whole family group. It takes a little work to get this large of a group all looking good and smiling at once! And to get it all together, when first one and then another must leave for a moment for baby or restroom break or.... you name it, it happens :)

The World's Smallest Gingerbread House?

This may be the world's smallest gingerbread house...

It's approximately two and a half inches tall and long.

It's my second try ever. Below is the first one I ever made.

Johnny wanted so very much to make a gingerbread house like the one in his story book. He had a lot of fun helping with it, but even more fun later, eating it. I think my fascination with gingerbread houses probably stems from my childhood desire to make one, and my imagination of candyland, and how neat it would be if candy grew on trees, etc. Once as a child I actually planted candy corn in hope of a harvest, and was very disappointed to dig it up days later and find it had simply gotten smeary, instead of sprouting corn!

Anyway, here it is! The gumdrops are normal size as you can see, and the M & M's are mini's. Anyone want the recipe? Post a comment if you do. :) It's a mini - mini recipe, just big enough for this little house and one man. My son decorated it with help.

It was neat to watch them swoop for the catch. They are extremely fast, which makes them tough to follow with a lens.

These great birds are a bit greedy and selfish! They watch each other with "eagle's eye" and when one makes a catch, the others are after him in a flash, swooping up to grab the fish from below. Then it's freefall for a while 'til one of them loses the catch.

So often we forget how many many things we have to be thankful for. When I look into the clear blue eyes of my baby and get that urge to squeeze her tight, many times God reminds me of the multitude of things I have to be thankful for.

Here's part of an articule that I found and liked(the author is unknown):
THANK YOU LORD!
     Lord, thank you for this sink of dirty dishes; we have plenty of food to eat.
     Thank you for this pile of dirty, stinky laundry; we have plenty of
      nice clothes to wear.
     And I would like to thank you, Lord, for those unmade beds; they were
      so warm and comfortable last night. I know that many have no bed.
     My thanks to you, Lord, for this bathroom, complete with all the
     spattered mess, the soggy, grimy towels, and the dirty lavatory; they are so
     convenient.
     Thank you for this finger-smudged refrigerator that needs defrosting so
     badly; it has served us faithfully for many years. It is full of cold drinks
     and enough leftovers for two or three meals.
     Thank you, Lord, for this oven that absolutely must be cleaned today;
      it has baked so many things over the years.
     The whole family is grateful for that tall grass that needs mowing and
     the lawn that needs raking; we all enjoy the yard.
     Thank you, Lord, even for that slamming door. My children are healthy and
     able to run and play.
     Lord, the presence of all these chores awaiting me say You have richly
     blessed my family. I shall do them cheerfully and I shall do them gratefully.
     Even though I clutch my blanket and growl when the alarm rings, thank
     you Lord      that I can hear. There are many who are deaf.
     Even though I keep my eyes closed against the morning light as long as
     possible, thank you Lord that I can see. There are many who are blind.
     Even though I huddle in my bed and put off rising, thank you Lord that
     I have the strength to rise. There are many who are bedridden.
     Even though the first hours of my day are hectic when socks are lost,
     toast is burned, tempers are short, and my children are loud, thank you Lord for
     my family; there are many who are lonely.
     Even though our breakfast table never looks like the pictures in the
     magazines and the menu is at times not balanced, thank you Lord for the food we have; there are many who are hungry.
      Even though I grumble and bemoan my fate from day to day and wish my
     circumstances were not so modest, thank you Lord for LIFE!

Happy Anniversary to Us!

In celebration of love, the most powerful force on earth. So often it comes unexpected, and unsought, and will not go away (we don't want it to, anymore!).

It's been a wonderful four years. God has taught us so much as we've grown together, and we look foward with anticipation to the years ahead.

I decided to make a special dinner for Darren to celebrate that special day four years ago, when we two became one. Some dear friends of ours volunteered to keep the children, and so after getting things in readiness, I took them over to drop them off. When I returned, I found a beautiful bouquet of flowers waiting for me. We had such a sweet time together. It was fun to just be a couple again instead of a quartet :)

I dressed up in my wedding dress just for the fun of it. I'm glad it still fits!

My dear sweetheart did something that made the evening specially memorable and precious to me! He asked if we could have a little communion service together and wash each others feet.

For supper I made shrimp in memory of our honeymoon (during which we had it several times),broccoli salad, cheese ball w/ pretzels, huckleberry desert with REAL huckleberries from out in Idaho, and sparkling grape juice.

She's so good at flashing those beautiful big smiles at the camera, and really did well for the session! Sometimes little ones can be quite contrary. But thankfully this was not the case. Luke and Michelle Showalter recently welcomed a sweet little bundle into their home. We got the priveledge of saving these sweet memories for them on images of their precious little sleeping angel.
I always marvel at the beauty and sweet innocence of a sleeping baby! How absolutely precious! This little one did so well and slept through most of the session.

There's something so fun... well, mostly, about a little boy.

They always seem to be coming up with something original and there's never a dull day.

Not too long ago my little man asked me to sing "Belly, belly"

What? "Mom, sing 'belly, belly' sing 'Belly, belly, Lord'.

It turned out that he wanted me to sing "Holy, Holy, Lord" :)

I let him go out for a bit by himself the other morning, and minutes later he was returning, UNBELIEVABLY muddy, saying "Munny, Mom, wet n' munny"
